Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has won an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract from Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO) for setting up a 1,320MW supercritical thermal power project in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

The coal-fired power project will be located at Ennore SEZ in Tamil Nadu and will feature two units of 660MW each.

The project has an estimated cost of around INR78bn ($1.2bn).

Under the contract, BHEL will be responsible for the design, engineering, manufacture, supply, construction, erection, testing and commissioning of the facility.

The contract was secured by BHEL against International Competitive Bidding (ICB), which was open to domestic as well as overseas bidders and included debt financing by the bidder.

Power Finance Corporation (PFC), another public sector unit, partnered with BHEL to provide the financing during the bidding stage.

Planned to be constructed on a reclaimed ash pond, the construction of the plant will require specialised civil design work.

The public sector enterprise plans to manufacture the chief equipment for the facility at its Trichy, Haridwar, Bhopal, Ranipet, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Jhansi plants.

BHEL Power Sector for the southern region will conduct civil works and commissioning of the equipment at the facility.

With this project, BHEL’s portfolio now includes the supply and installation for 35 supercritical boilers and 30 turbines of 660, 700 and 800 MW ratings.

To date, the company has commissioned more than 380 coal-based power units in India, with a combined generation capacity of more than 95,000MW.
