North America energy storage contracts activity down 7% in Q1 2022

There were 25 energy storage contracts announced in the North America region in Q1 2022, marking a drop of 7% over the last four-quarter average of 27, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Electricity Procurement stood at first place when compared with other power tender categories in the North America region in Q1 2022 with 81 contracts and a 47.4% share, followed by Power Plant with 27 contracts and a 15.8% share and Energy Storage with 25 contracts and a 14.6% share during the quarter.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: 15 contracts and a 60% share
  2. Supply & Erection: six contracts and a 24% share
  3. Project Implementation: four contracts and a 16% share.

Solar is top technology for North America energy storage contracts in Q1 2022

Looking at energy storage contracts by the type of technology in the North America region, solar accounted for 12 contracts with a 100% share.

North America energy storage contracts in Q1 2022: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of energy storage contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Pacific Gas and Electric (United States): 1,323.7MW from eight contracts
  2. EDF Renewables North America (United States): 274MW from one contract
  3. Sacramento Municipal Utility District (United States): 200MW capacity from one contract.

North America energy storage contracts in Q1 2022: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Vistra Energy (United States): 350MW from one contract
  2. Terra-Gen (United States): 349MW from three contracts
  3. Arevon Energy (United States): 300MW capacity from one contract.
