North America energy storage contracts activity up 4% in Q4 2021

There were 25 energy storage contracts announced in the North America region in Q4 2021, marking a rise of 4% over the last four-quarter average of 24, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Electricity Procurement stood at first place when compared with other power tender categories in the North America region in Q4 2021 with 52 contracts and a 26.5% share, followed by Power Plant with 44 contracts and a 22.4% share and Generation Equipment with 43 contracts and a 21.9% share during the quarter.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: ten contracts and a 40% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: seven contracts and a 28% share
  3. Supply & Erection: six contracts and a 24% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: two contracts and an 8% share.

Solar is top technology for North America energy storage contracts in Q4 2021

Looking at energy storage contracts by the type of technology in the North America region, solar accounted for 17 contracts with an 89.5% share, followed by thermal with one contract and a 5.3% share and wind with one contract and a 5.3% share.

The top issuers of energy storage contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Weyerhaeuser (United States): 1,000MW from one contract
  2. Southern California Edison (United States): 537.5MW from one contract
  3. National Grid Renewables (United States): 275MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Apex Clean Energy Holdings (United States): 1,000MW from one contract
  2. Ameresco (United States): 537.5MW from one contract
  3. Moss Solar (United States): 504MW capacity from one contract.
