North America energy storage contracts activity down 9% in Q4 2020

There were 21 energy storage contracts announced in the North America region in Q4 2020, marking a drop of 9% over the last four-quarter average of 23, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Electricity Procurement stood at first place when compared with other power tender categories in the North America region in Q4 2020 with 74 contracts and a 36.3% share, followed by Generation Equipment with 54 contracts and a 26.5% share and Power Plant with 39 contracts and a 19.1% share during the quarter.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: eight contracts and a 38.1% share
  2. Project Implementation: six contracts and a 28.6% share
  3. Supply & Erection: six contracts and a 28.6% share
  4. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 4.8% share.

Solar is top technology for North America energy storage contracts in Q4 2020

Looking at energy storage contracts by the type of technology in the North America region, solar accounted for 12 contracts with a 92.3% share, followed by thermal with one contract and a 7.7% share.

North America energy storage contracts in Q4 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of energy storage contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Terra-Gen L (United States): 1,118MW from one contract
  2. Northern Indiana Public Service Co L (United States): 635MW from two contracts
  3. Con Edison Clean Energy Businesses (United States): 100MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Mortenson Construction (United States): 1,118MW from one contract
  2. NextEra Energy Resources L (United States): 635MW from two contracts
  3. 174 Power Global (United States): 100MW capacity from one contract.
