North America power industry contracts in January 2021: The US leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, the US led the activity in January 2021 with 86 contracts and a share of 96.6%, up 11.9% over the previous month and up 26% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Canada with two contracts and a share of 2.2% and U.S. Virgin Islands with one contract and a share of 1.1% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, the US held the top spot with 68 contracts, followed by Canada with seven and Mexico with two contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in January 2021

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 52 contracts and a 59.1% share, followed by wind with 24 contracts and a 27.3% share and thermal with six contracts and a 6.8% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in North America as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in January 2021, with 42 contracts, followed by Electricity Procurement (24) and Generation Equipment (20).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 39 contracts and a 43.8% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: 23 contracts and a 25.8% share
  3. Supply & Erection: 22 contracts and a 24.7% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: two contracts and a 2.2% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: two contracts and a 2.2% share
  6. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 1.1% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (United States): 4,602.89MW from 22 contracts
  2. Pattern Energy Group (United States): 1,050MW from one contract
  3. Verizon Communications (United States): 692.5MW capacity from four contracts.
