North America power plant contracts activity down 48% in Q1 2022

There were 27 power plant contracts announced in the North America region in Q1 2022, marking a drop of 48% over the last four-quarter average of 52, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Electricity Procurement stood at first place when compared with other power tender categories in the North America region in Q1 2022 with 81 contracts and a 47.4% share, followed by Power Plant with 27 contracts and a 15.8% share and Energy Storage with 25 contracts and a 14.6% share during the quarter.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 16 contracts and a 59.3% share
  2. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: five contracts and an 18.5% share
  3. Consulting & Similar Services: three contracts and an 11.1% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: three contracts and an 11.1% share.

Solar is top technology for North America power plant contracts in Q1 2022

Looking at power plant contracts by the type of technology in the North America region, solar accounted for 18 contracts with a 66.7% share, followed by thermal with three contracts and an 11.1% share and wind with three contracts and an 11.1% share.

North America power plant contracts in Q1 2022: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of power plant contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Comision Federal de Electricidad (Mexico): 1,500MW from one contract
  2. Lightsource BP Renewable Energy Investments (United Kingdom): 610MW from three contracts
  3. EDF Renewables North America (United States): 274MW capacity from one contract.

North America power plant contracts in Q1 2022: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Tecnicas Reunidas (Spain) and TSK Group (Spain): 1,500MW from one contract
  2. McCarthy Building Companies (United States): 463MW from three contracts
  3. Black & Veatch (United States): 270MW capacity from one contract.
