North America power plant contracts activity down 29% in Q2 2021

There were 41 power plant contracts announced in the North America region in Q2 2021, marking a drop of 29% over the last four-quarter average of 58, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Electricity Procurement stood at first place when compared with other power tender categories in the North America region in Q2 2021 with 89 contracts and a 44.3% share, followed by Power Plant with 41 contracts and a 20.4% share and Generation Equipment with 40 contracts and a 19.9% share during the quarter.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 31 contracts and a 75.6% share
  2. Consulting & Similar Services: five contracts and a 12.2% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: four contracts and a 9.8% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: one contract and a 2.4% share.

Solar is top technology for North America power plant contracts in Q2 2021

Looking at power plant contracts by the type of technology in the North America region, solar accounted for 29 contracts with a 70.7% share, followed by wind with six contracts and a 14.6% share and thermal with two contracts and a 4.9% share.

North America power plant contracts in Q2 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of power plant contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. SB Energy (Japan): 649MW from one contract
  2. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners KS (Denmark) and Greengate Power (Canada): 465MW from one contract
  3. Invenergy (United States) and Northern Indiana Public Service (United States): 200MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Rosendin Electric (United States): 649MW from one contract
  2. PCL Construction Group (Canada): 465MW from one contract
  3. IEA Constructors (United States) and Capital Dynamics (United States): 200MW capacity from one contract.
