Asia-Pacific power industry contracts in January 2022: India leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, India led the activity in January 2022 with 15 contracts and a share of 31.9%, up 2.2% over the previous month and down 32% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by China with 11 contracts and a share of 23.4% and South Korea with six contracts and a share of 12.8% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, China held the top spot with 33 contracts, followed by India with 22 and Australia with eight contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in January 2022

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 31 contracts and a 68.9% share, followed by wind with six contracts and a 13.3% share and thermal with five contracts and an 11.1% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in Asia-Pacific as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in January 2022, with 18 contracts, followed by Electricity Procurement (12) and Generation Equipment (10).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 16 contracts and a 34% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 14 contracts and a 29.8% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 12 contracts and a 25.5% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: four contracts and an 8.5% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: one contract and a 2.1% share.

Power contracts in January 2022: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Asia-Pacific were:

  1. Eastern Power Distribution Co of Andhra Pradesh (India) and Southern Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh (India): 625MW from one contract
  2. Korea East-West Power (South Korea): 571MW from one contract
  3. Huaneng Lancang River Hydropower (China): 300MW capacity from two contracts.
