Global power industry contracts in December 2020: Solar technology down 38%

Solar technology contracts activity in December 2020 saw 93 contracts announced, marking a drop of 38% over the last 12-month average of 151, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, solar held the second position in terms of number of contracts during December 2020 with a 36.2% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Solar technology tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: 34 contracts and a 36.6% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 30 contracts and a 32.3% share
  3. Project Implementation: 25 contracts and a 26.9% share
  4. Electricity Supply: two contracts and a 2.2% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: one contract and a 1.1% share
  6. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: one contract and a 1.1% share.

Asia-Pacific leads solar contracts activity in December 2020

Comparing contracts activity in solar technology in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 39 contracts and a share of 41.9% during December 2020, followed by North America with 23 contracts and a 24.7% share and Europe with 15 contracts and a 16.1% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with nine contracts and a 9.7% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with seven contracts and a 7.5% share.

Solar technology contracts in December 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Solar technology for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Amazon Web Services (United States): 1,291MW from four contracts
  2. Terra-Gen L (United States): 1,118MW from one contract
  3. Vietnam Electricity (Vietnam): 330MW capacity from one contract.

Solar technology contracts in December 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Mortenson Construction (United States): 1,118MW from one contract
  2. Engie (France): 650MW from three contracts
  3. Acciona Energia (Spain): 641MW capacity from one contract.
