Global power industry contracts in December 2020: Thermal technology up 27%

Thermal technology contracts activity in December 2020 saw 42 contracts announced, marking a rise of 27% over the last 12-month average of 33, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Gas was the top category in thermal technology in terms of number of contracts for the month, accounting for 34 contracts and a 77.3% share, followed by Coal with eight contracts and an 18.2% share. Oil stood in third place with two contracts and a 4.5% share.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, thermal held the third position in terms of number of contracts during December 2020 with a 16.3% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Thermal technology tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 16 contracts and a 38.1% share
  2. Project Implementation: 14 contracts and a 33.3% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: six contracts and a 14.3% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: three contracts and a 7.1% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: three contracts and a 7.1% share.

Asia-Pacific leads thermal contracts activity in December 2020

Comparing contracts activity in thermal technology in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 19 contracts and a share of 45.2% during December 2020, followed by North America with eight contracts and a 19% share and Europe with seven contracts and a 16.7% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with five contracts and an 11.9% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with three contracts and a 7.1% share.

Thermal technology contracts in December 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Thermal technology for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution (India): 3,085MW from one contract
  2. AlDhahir Group (Jordan): 1,000MW from one contract
  3. Electricidade De Mozambique EP (Mozambique): 450MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Adani Power Maharashtra (India): 3,085MW from one contract
  2. Anhui No.1 Electric Power Construction (China), Anhui No.2 Electric Power Engineering & Construction (China) and East China Electric Power Design Institute (China): 1,320MW from one contract
  3. China Energy Engineering Group Planning and Engineering (China) and Power Construction Corporation of China (China): 1,000MW capacity from one contract.
