Europe power industry contracts in Q4 2021: Spain leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, Spain led the activity in Q4 2021 with 116 contracts and a share of 31.7%, up 24.2% over the previous quarter and up 97% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by the UK with 47 contracts and a share of 12.8% and Germany with 30 contracts and a share of 8.2% during the quarter.

Looking at the last four-quarter average, France held the top spot with 96 contracts, followed by the UK with 69 and Spain with 59 contracts.

Wind is top technology area for contracts in Q4 2021

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, wind accounted for the largest proportion with 187 contracts and a 55% share, followed by solar with 115 contracts and a 33.8% share and nuclear with 11 contracts and a 3.2% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in Europe power contracts activity during Q4 2021, with 161 contracts, followed by Electricity Procurement (151) and Generation Equipment (102).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 153 contracts and a 41.8% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 115 contracts and a 31.4% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 59 contracts and a 16.1% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 22 contracts and a 6% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 14 contracts and a 3.8% share
  6. Electricity Supply: two contracts and a 0.5% share

The top issuers of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Europe were:

  1. Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners KS (Denmark): 10,000MW from one contract
  2. Ministry for the Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (Spain): 3,123.88MW from 91 contracts
  3. EDF (United States): 1,400MW capacity from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Europe were:

  1. Acciona (Spain), Boskalis (Netherlands), DEME Group (Belgium) and MT Hojgaard Holding (Denmark): 10,000MW from one contract
  2. RWE (Germany): 2,400MW from two contracts
  3. Green Capital Development (Spain): 1,340MW capacity from 19 contracts.
