Power industry contracts in January 2020: Europe leads global activity

On comparing contracts activity in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 79 contracts and a share of 35.4% during January 2020, followed by North America with 53 contracts and a 23.8% share and Asia-Pacific with 52 contracts and a 23.3% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 27 contracts and a 12.1% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with 12 contracts and a 5.4% share.

On the basis of the last 12-month average, Europe held a lead over others with 116 contracts, followed by Asia-Pacific with 75.

Solar tops by technology in January 2020

Looking at contracts by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 88 contracts and a 44% share, followed by wind with 59 contracts and a 29.5% share and thermal with 18 contracts and a 9% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment during January 2020, with 81 contracts, followed by Electricity Procurement (63) and Generation Equipment (49).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 68 contracts and a 30.5% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 57 contracts and a 25.6% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 54 contracts and a 24.2% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 18 contracts and an 8.1% share
  5. Consulting & Similar Services: 17 contracts and a 7.6% share
  6. Electricity Supply: nine contracts and a 4% share.

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Hyunson Engineering & Construction: 1,300MW from one contract
  2. Harrison Power (United States): 1,085MW from one contract
  3. Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association (United States): 815MW capacity from six contracts.

Power contracts in January 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Hyundai Engineering & Construction (South Korea), Hyundai Engineering (South Korea) and Posco International (South Korea): 1,300MW from one contract
  2. Gemma Power Systems (United States): 1,085MW from one contract
  3. China Gezhouba Group International Engineering (China): 1,000MW capacity from one contract.
