Power industry contracts in January 2021: Europe leads global activity

On comparing contracts activity in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 137 contracts and a share of 40.8% during January 2021, followed by North America with 89 contracts and a 26.5% share and Asia-Pacific with 80 contracts and a 23.8% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 23 contracts and a 6.8% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with seven contracts and a 2.1% share.

On the basis of the last 12-month average, Europe held a lead over others with 167 contracts, followed by Asia-Pacific with 95.

Solar tops by technology in January 2021

Looking at contracts by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 167 contracts and a 56.4% share, followed by wind with 78 contracts and a 26.4% share and thermal with 28 contracts and a 9.5% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment during January 2021, with 162 contracts, followed by Generation Equipment (76) and Electricity Procurement (53).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 158 contracts and a 47% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 100 contracts and a 29.8% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 51 contracts and a 15.2% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 19 contracts and a 5.7% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: seven contracts and a 2.1% share
  6. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 0.3% share.

Power contracts in January 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (United States): 4,602.89MW from 22 contracts
  2. Gansu Province Electric Power Investment Group (China): 2,000MW from one contract
  3. Pattern Energy Group (United States): 1,050MW capacity from one contract.

Power contracts in January 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. China Energy Engineering Group Planning and Engineering (China): 3,685MW from seven contracts
  2. Equinor Wind US L (United States): 2,490MW from one contract
  3. Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute (China): 1,620MW capacity from three contracts.
