Global power industry contracts in January 2021: Solar technology up 13%

Solar technology contracts activity in January 2021 saw 167 contracts announced, marking a rise of 13% over the last 12-month average of 148, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, solar held the top position in terms of number of contracts during January 2021 with a 56.4% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Solar technology tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 111 contracts and a 66.5% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: 30 contracts and an 18% share
  3. Supply & Erection: 20 contracts and a 12% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: three contracts and a 1.8% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: three contracts and a 1.8% share.

Europe leads solar contracts activity in January 2021

Comparing contracts activity in solar technology in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 73 contracts and a share of 43.7% during January 2021, followed by North America with 52 contracts and a 31.1% share and Asia-Pacific with 36 contracts and a 21.6% share.

In fourth place was South and Central America with three contracts and a 1.8% share and in fifth place was Middle East and Africa with three contracts and a 1.8% share.

Solar technology contracts in January 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Solar technology for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (United States): 2,112.89MW from 21 contracts
  2. Verizon Communications (United States): 692.5MW from four contracts
  3. Lightsource BP Renewable Energy Investments (United Kingdom): 316MW capacity from two contracts.

Solar technology contracts in January 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Invenergy L (United States): 525MW from two contracts
  2. Hecate Energy L (United States): 500MW from one contract
  3. EDP Renewables North America L (United States): 499MW capacity from three contracts.
