Global power industry contracts for June 2021 down 8%

Power industry contracts activity in June 2021 saw 384 contracts announced, marking a drop of 8% over the last 12-month average of 418, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Power industry contracts in June 2021: Europe leads global activity

On comparing contracts activity in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 159 contracts and a share of 41.4% during June 2021, followed by Asia-Pacific with 97 contracts and a 25.3% share and North America with 80 contracts and a 20.8% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 34 contracts and an 8.9% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with 14 contracts and a 3.6% share.

On the basis of the last 12-month average, Europe held a lead over others with 188 contracts, followed by Asia-Pacific with 106.

Solar tops by technology in June 2021

Looking at contracts by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 171 contracts and a 50.7% share, followed by wind with 112 contracts and a 33.2% share and thermal with 33 contracts and a 9.8% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment during June 2021, with 137 contracts, followed by Generation Equipment (111) and Electricity Procurement (82).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 127 contracts and a 33.1% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 105 contracts and a 27.3% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 78 contracts and a 20.3% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 41 contracts and a 10.7% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 30 contracts and a 7.8% share
  6. Others: two contracts and a 0.5% share
  7. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 0.3% share.

Power contracts in June 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Ministry of Electricity, Iraq (Iraq): 2,000MW from one contract
  2. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 1,300MW from three contracts
  3. Urzad Regulacji Energetyki (Poland): 1,197MW capacity from one contract.

Power contracts in June 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Abu Dhabi Future Energy (United Arab Emirates): 2,457MW from two contracts
  2. Southwest Electric Power Design Institute (China): 1,320MW from one contract
  3. Northland Power (Canada) and Polski Koncern Naftowy Orlen (Poland): 1,197MW capacity from one contract.
