Power industry contracts in Middle East and Africa for August 2021 up 3%

Middle East and Africa power industry contracts activity in August 2021 saw 34 contracts announced, marking a rise of 3% over the last 12-month average of 33, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Middle East and Africa power industry contracts in August 2021: Nigeria leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, Nigeria led the activity in August 2021 with eight contracts and a share of 23.5%, up 12.1% over the previous month and up 700% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Egypt with five contracts and a share of 14.7% and Saudi Arabia with five contracts and a share of 14.7% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, Saudi Arabia held the top spot with five contracts, followed by the United Arab Emirates with three and Egypt with two contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in August 2021

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 13 contracts and a 61.9% share, followed by thermal with six contracts and a 28.6% share and biopower with one contract and a 4.8% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in Middle East and Africa as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in August 2021, with ten contracts, followed by T&D Project (9) and Generation Equipment (6).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 15 contracts and a 44.1% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 11 contracts and a 32.4% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: four contracts and an 11.8% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: three contracts and an 8.8% share
  5. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: one contract and a 2.9% share.

Power contracts in August 2021: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. Government of Iraq (Iraq): 2,000MW from one contract
  2. Sabalan Barghe Omid: 480MW from one contract
  3. Nigerian National Petroleum (Nigeria): 50MW capacity from one contract.

Power contracts in August 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. Power Construction Corporation of China (China): 2,000MW from one contract
  2. MAPNA Group (Iran): 480MW from one contract
  3. China Machinery Engineering (China): 50MW capacity from one contract.
