Middle East and Africa power industry contracts in Q4 2021: Saudi Arabia leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, Saudi Arabia led the activity in Q4 2021 with 28 contracts and a share of 23.9%, up 9.6% over the previous quarter and up 56% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by South Africa with 25 contracts and a share of 21.4% and the United Arab Emirates with nine contracts and a share of 7.7% during the quarter.

Looking at the last four-quarter average, Saudi Arabia held the top spot with 18 contracts, followed by the United Arab Emirates with nine and Egypt with eight contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in Q4 2021

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 46 contracts and a 60.5% share, followed by wind with 15 contracts and a 19.7% share and thermal with 13 contracts and a 17.1% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Power Plant was the most popular segment in Middle East and Africa power contracts activity during Q4 2021, with 45 contracts, followed by T&D Project (34) and Electricity Procurement (16).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 68 contracts and a 58.1% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 23 contracts and a 19.7% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: 15 contracts and a 12.8% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: eight contracts and a 6.8% share
