Power industry contracts in Middle East and Africa for September 2021 down 15%

Middle East and Africa power industry contracts activity in September 2021 saw 29 contracts announced, marking a drop of 15% over the last 12-month average of 34, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Middle East and Africa power industry contracts in September 2021: Saudi Arabia leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, Saudi Arabia led the activity in September 2021 with five contracts and a share of 17.2%, up 2.9% over the previous month and flat growth when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by the United Arab Emirates with three contracts and a share of 10.3% and Egypt with three contracts and a share of 10.3% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, Saudi Arabia held the top spot with five contracts, followed by the United Arab Emirates with three and Egypt with two contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in September 2021

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with nine contracts and a 56.3% share, followed by thermal with four contracts and a 25% share and wind with two contracts and a 12.5% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in Middle East and Africa as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Project was the most popular segment in September 2021, with ten contracts, followed by Power Plant (8) and T&D Equipment (6).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 14 contracts and a 48.3% share
  2. Supply & Erection: nine contracts and a 31% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: two contracts and a 6.9% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: two contracts and a 6.9% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: two contracts and a 6.9% share.

Power contracts in September 2021: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. LPC Lufubu Power (Zambia): 163MW from one contract
  2. Societe d’Electricite et d’Eau du Gabon (Gabon) and Government Of Gabon (Gabon): 120MW from one contract
  3. EDF Renewables Israel (Israel): 60MW capacity from one contract.

Power contracts in September 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. TotalEnergies (France): 1,000MW from one contract
  2. Sinohydro Bureau 11 (China): 163MW from one contract
  3. Wartsila (Finland) and Gabon Power (Gabon): 120MW capacity from one contract.
