Power industry contracts in North America for December 2021 down 38%

North America power industry contracts activity in December 2021 saw 42 contracts announced, marking a drop of 38% over the last 12-month average of 68, according to GlobalData’s power database.

North America power industry contracts in December 2021: The US leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, the US led the activity in December 2021 with 39 contracts and a share of 92.9%, up 6.7% over the previous month and down 35% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Canada with three contracts and a share of 7.1%.

Looking at the last 12-month average, the US held the top spot with 60 contracts, followed by Canada with four and Mexico with one contract.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in December 2021

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 18 contracts and a 46.2% share, followed by wind with 16 contracts and a 41% share and thermal with three contracts and a 7.7% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment in North America as tracked by GlobalData, Generation Equipment was the most popular segment in December 2021, with 15 contracts, followed by Power Plant (11) and Electricity Procurement (11).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 19 contracts and a 45.2% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: 11 contracts and a 26.2% share
  3. Project Implementation: ten contracts and a 23.8% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: two contracts and a 4.8% share.

Power contracts in December 2021: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Amazon Web Services (United States): 1,300MW from two contracts
  2. Weyerhaeuser (United States): 1,000MW from one contract
  3. Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (United States): 400MW capacity from one contract.

Power contracts in December 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Apex Clean Energy Holdings (United States): 1,000MW from one contract
  2. Ocean Winds (Spain) and Shell New Energies US (United States): 400MW from one contract
  3. TransAlta (Canada) and M. A. Mortenson (United States): 300MW capacity from one contract.
