Power industry contracts in North America for Q3 2021 down 15%

North America power industry contracts activity in Q3 2021 saw 186 contracts announced, marking a drop of 15% over the last four-quarter average of 220, according to GlobalData’s power database.

North America power industry contracts in Q3 2021: The US leads activity

Looking at contracts by country, the US led the activity in Q3 2021 with 171 contracts and a share of 91.9%, up 6.1% over the previous quarter and down 11% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by Canada with 12 contracts and a share of 6.5% and Mexico with two contracts and a share of 1.1% during the quarter.

Looking at the last four-quarter average, the US held the top spot with 192 contracts, followed by Canada with 19 and Mexico with five contracts.

Solar is top technology area for contracts in Q3 2021

Looking at contracts divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 107 contracts and a 63.7% share, followed by wind with 39 contracts and a 23.2% share and thermal with nine contracts and a 5.4% share.

Looking at power industry contracts divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, Electricity Procurement was the most popular segment in North America power contracts activity during Q3 2021, with 84 contracts, followed by Generation Equipment (45) and Power Plant (40).

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Power Purchase Agreement: 76 contracts and a 40.9% share
  2. Supply & Erection: 56 contracts and a 30.1% share
  3. Project Implementation: 32 contracts and a 17.2% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: ten contracts and a 5.4% share
  5. Electricity Supply: seven contracts and a 3.8% share
  6. Consulting & Similar Services: four contracts and a 2.2% share
  7. Others: one contract and a 0.5% share.

Power contracts in Q3 2021: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Intersect Power (United States): 1,041MW from three contracts
  2. Salt River Project (United States): 900MW from four contracts
  3. Central Coast Community Energy (United States): 488.3MW capacity from six contracts.

Power contracts in Q3 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in North America were:

  1. Signal Energy Constructors (United States): 1,146MW from three contracts
  2. TotalEnergies (France): 546MW from two contracts
  3. Clenera (United States): 520MW capacity from two contracts.
