Global power industry contracts in Q2 2021: Solar technology down 14%

Solar technology contracts activity in Q2 2021 saw 454 contracts announced, marking a drop of 14% over the last four-quarter average of 529, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

Looking at global power contracts activity divided by the type of technology, solar held the top position in terms of number of contracts during Q2 2021 with a 50.3% share.

The proportion of contracts by category in the Solar technology tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 214 contracts and a 47.1% share
  2. Power Purchase Agreement: 153 contracts and a 33.7% share
  3. Supply & Erection: 60 contracts and a 13.2% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 13 contracts and a 2.9% share
  5. Electricity Supply: seven contracts and a 1.5% share
  6. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: seven contracts and a 1.5% share.

Europe leads solar contracts activity in Q2 2021

Comparing contracts activity in solar technology in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 166 contracts and a share of 36.6% during Q2 2021, followed by North America with 110 contracts and a 24.2% share and Asia-Pacific with 104 contracts and a 22.9% share.

In fourth place was Middle East and Africa with 42 contracts and a 9.3% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with 32 contracts and a 7% share.

Solar technology contracts in Q2 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of contracts in Solar technology for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. State Power Investment (China): 7,200MW from one contract
  2. Saudi Power Procurement (Saudi Arabia): 2,970MW from seven contracts
  3. Ministry of Electricity, Iraq (Iraq): 2,000MW capacity from one contract.

Solar technology contracts in Q2 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Jolywood (Taizhou) Solar Technology (China): 7,200MW from one contract
  2. Abu Dhabi Future Energy (United Arab Emirates): 3,957MW from seven contracts
  3. ACWA Power International (Saudi Arabia): 2,500MW capacity from four contracts.
