Power industry tenders in Middle East and Africa for December 2021 down 59%

Middle East and Africa power industry tenders activity in December 2021 saw 75 tenders announced, marking a drop of 59% over the last 12-month average of 184, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Middle East and Africa power industry tenders in December 2021: South Africa leads activity

Looking at tenders by country, South Africa led the activity in December 2021 with 37 tenders and a share of 49.3%, up 2.4% over the previous month and down 59% when compared with the last 12 month-average, followed by Kuwait with five tenders and a share of 6.7% and Zimbabwe with five tenders and a share of 6.7% during the month.

Looking at the last 12-month average, South Africa held the top spot with 90 tenders, followed by Kenya with ten and Jordan with five tenders.

Solar is top technology area for tenders in December 2021

Looking at tenders divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 18 tenders and a 66.7% share, followed by thermal with seven tenders and a 25.9% share and geothermal with one tender and a 3.7% share.

Looking at power industry tenders divided by segment in Middle East and Africa as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Equipment was the most popular segment in December 2021, with 38 tenders, followed by Power Plant (17) and T&D Project (10).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 40 tenders and a 53.3% share
  2. Project Implementation: 21 tenders and a 28% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 11 tenders and a 14.7% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: three tenders and a 4% share.

Power tenders in December 2021: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of tenders for the month in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. Minister of Energy Transition and Renewable Energies: 1,000MW from one tender
  2. United Nations Development Programme Iraq (Iraq): 0.08MW from one tender
  3. United Nations Development Programme (United States): 0.02MW capacity from one tender.
