Middle East and Africa power industry tenders in Q3 2021: South Africa leads activity

Looking at tenders by country, South Africa led the activity in Q3 2021 with 315 tenders and a share of 54.4%, up 2.2% over the previous quarter and up 71% when compared with the last four-quarter average, followed by Jordan with 24 tenders and a share of 4.1% and Uganda with 23 tenders and a share of 4% during the quarter.

Looking at the last four-quarter average, South Africa held the top spot with 184 tenders, followed by Kenya with 32 and Oman with 16 tenders.

Solar is top technology area for tenders in Q3 2021

Looking at tenders divided by the type of technology, solar accounted for the largest proportion with 102 tenders and a 54.5% share, followed by thermal with 76 tenders and a 40.6% share and hydro with five tenders and a 2.7% share.

Looking at power industry tenders divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Equipment was the most popular segment in Middle East and Africa power tenders activity during Q3 2021, with 323 tenders, followed by Power Plant (91) and Generation Equipment (84).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 373 tenders and a 64.4% share
  2. Project Implementation: 110 tenders and a 19% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 60 tenders and a 10.4% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 34 tenders and a 5.9% share
  5. Electricity Supply: two tenders and a 0.3% share.

Power tenders in Q3 2021: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of tenders for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved in Middle East and Africa were:

  1. Ministry of Electricity and Water (Kuwait): 7,200MW from two tenders
  2. Ministere de l’Energie (Algeria): 1,000MW from one tender
  3. The Islamic Charity Center Society: 950MW capacity from one tender.
