Global power industry tenders for Q2 2021 down 9%

Power industry tenders activity in Q2 2021 saw 2,137 tenders announced, marking a drop of 9% over the last four-quarter average of 2,357, according to GlobalData’s power database.

Power industry tenders in Q2 2021: North America leads global activity

On comparing tenders activity in different regions of the globe, North America held the top position with 668 tenders and a share of 31.3% during Q2 2021, followed by Middle East and Africa with 577 tenders and a 27% share and Asia-Pacific with 477 tenders and a 22.3% share.

In fourth place was Europe with 325 tenders and a 15.2% share and in fifth place was South and Central America with 90 tenders and a 4.2% share.

On the basis of the last four-quarter average, Asia-Pacific held a lead over others with 1,009 tenders, followed by North America with 683.

Thermal tops by technology in Q2 2021

Looking at tenders by the type of technology, thermal accounted for the largest proportion with 409 tenders and a 44.6% share, followed by solar with 372 tenders and a 40.6% share and wind with 51 tenders and a 5.6% share.

Looking at power industry tenders divided by segment as tracked by GlobalData, T&D Equipment was the most popular segment in global power tenders activity during Q2 2021, with 903 tenders, followed by Generation Equipment (438) and Power Plant (354).

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 1,209 tenders and a 56.6% share
  2. Project Implementation: 518 tenders and a 24.2% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 282 tenders and a 13.2% share
  4. Consulting & Similar Services: 72 tenders and a 3.4% share
  5. Power Purchase Agreement: 30 tenders and a 1.4% share
  6. Electricity Supply: 17 tenders and a 0.8% share
  7. Others: nine tenders and a 0.4% share.

Power tenders in Q2 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of tenders for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Turkey (Turkey) and Netherlands Enterprise Agency (Netherlands): 4,000MW from one tender
  2. Solar Energy Corporation of India (India): 3,600MW from three tenders
  3. Southwestern Electric Power Company (SWEPCO) (United States): 3,300MW capacity from two tenders.
