The project was developed by Instituto de Recursos Hidraulicos y Electrificacion. Government Of Panama, The AES and Others are currently owning the project having ownership stake of 50.46%, 49.07% and 0.47% respectively.

Bayano is a reservoir based project. The hydro reservoir capacity is 27,000 million cubic meter. Bayano underwent through rehabilitation & modernization during 2002-2004.
