Kaiga 1 is a Generation II nuclear reactor developed by Nuclear Power Corporation of India, the main contractor for the project.

The 220MW reactor is owned and operated by Nuclear Power Corporation of India. The company has a stake of 100%.

The PHWR reactor generates 1,460.86GWh/annum of electricity. It features 3,672 fuel assemblies in the core of reactor, the place where fission occurs and energy is released. Safety contol rods that are used to control the fission rate in the reactor are 26 in number.

The reactor construction commenced in Sep, 1989 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in Nov, 2000.

Bharat Heavy Electricals was selected as the steam turbine supplier for the nuclear reactor. The company provided 1 steam turbine for the project. Department of Atomic Energy, India and Nuclear Power Corporation of India were selected as the architect engineers for the reactor. The reactor system was supplied by Nuclear Power Corporation of India. The reactor vessel have been supplied by Larsen & Toubro Limited and Walchandnagar Industries. The material used for the construction of the vessel is Stainless Steel (SS 304L). The civil works were carried out by Larsen & Toubro.
