Power plant contracts up 16% in January 2021

Power plant contracts in January 2021 saw 162 contracts announced, marking a rise of 16% over the last 12-month average of 140, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 138 contracts and an 85.2% share
  2. Consulting & Similar Services: 17 contracts and a 10.5% share
  3. Power Purchase Agreement: four contracts and a 2.5% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: three contracts and a 1.9% share.

Europe leads power plant activity in January 2021

Comparing contracts activity in power plant segment in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 72 contracts and a share of 44.4% during January 2021, followed by Asia-Pacific with 43 contracts and a 26.5% share and North America with 42 contracts and a 25.9% share.

Solar is leading technology for power plant contracts in January 2021

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 119 contracts with a 73% share, followed by wind with 24 contracts and a 14.7% share and thermal with 12 contracts and a 7.4% share.

Power plant contracts in January 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of power plant contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (United States): 2,112.89MW from 21 contracts
  2. Gansu Province Electric Power Investment Group (China): 2,000MW from one contract
  3. Pattern Energy Group (United States): 1,050MW capacity from one contract.

Power plant contracts in January 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. China Energy Engineering Group Planning and Engineering (China): 3,685MW from seven contracts
  2. Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute (China): 1,620MW from three contracts
  3. China Gezhouba Group (China): 1,555MW capacity from two contracts.
