Power plant contracts down 26% in Q2 2021

Power plant contracts in Q2 2021 saw 380 contracts announced, marking a drop of 26% over the last four-quarter average of 511, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 275 contracts and a 72.4% share
  2. Consulting & Similar Services: 75 contracts and a 19.7% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 20 contracts and a 5.3% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: ten contracts and a 2.6% share.

Europe leads power plant activity in Q2 2021

Comparing contracts activity in power plant segment in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 182 contracts and a share of 47.9% during Q2 2021, followed by Asia-Pacific with 116 contracts and a 30.5% share and North America with 41 contracts and a 10.8% share.

Solar is leading technology for power plant contracts in Q2 2021

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 238 contracts with a 61.7% share, followed by wind with 83 contracts and a 21.5% share and thermal with 26 contracts and a 6.7% share.

Power plant contracts in Q2 2021: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of power plant contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. State Power Investment (China): 7,200MW from one contract
  2. Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Uzbekistan): 3,897MW from four contracts
  3. Ministry of Electricity, Iraq (Iraq): 2,000MW capacity from one contract.

Power plant contracts in Q2 2021: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Jolywood (Taizhou) Solar Technology (China): 7,200MW from one contract
  2. Abu Dhabi Future Energy (United Arab Emirates): 4,927MW from six contracts
  3. China Energy Engineering Group Planning and Engineering (China): 3,940MW capacity from ten contracts.
