Power plant contracts down 44% in Q4 2020

Power plant contracts in Q4 2020 saw 264 contracts announced, marking a drop of 44% over the last four-quarter average of 471, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 178 contracts and a 67.4% share
  2. Consulting & Similar Services: 47 contracts and a 17.8% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 23 contracts and an 8.7% share
  4. Power Purchase Agreement: 16 contracts and a 6.1% share.

Asia-Pacific leads power plant activity in Q4 2020

Comparing contracts activity in power plant segment in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 110 contracts and a share of 41.7% during Q4 2020, followed by Europe with 77 contracts and a 29.2% share and North America with 39 contracts and a 14.8% share.

Solar is leading technology for power plant contracts in Q4 2020

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 118 contracts with a 43.7% share, followed by wind with 64 contracts and a 23.7% share and thermal with 34 contracts and a 12.6% share.

Power plant contracts in Q4 2020: Top issuers by capacity

The top issuers of power plant contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. ACWA Power International (Saudi Arabia): 2,589MW from two contracts
  2. Terra-Gen L (United States): 1,118MW from one contract
  3. AlDhahir Group (Jordan): 1,000MW capacity from one contract.

Power plant contracts in Q4 2020: Top winners by capacity

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. SEPCOIII Electric Power Construction (China): 2,513MW from three contracts
  2. Power Construction Corporation of China (China): 1,834.95MW from three contracts
  3. China Energy Engineering Group Planning and Engineering (China): 1,497.8MW capacity from five contracts.
