Power plant tenders down 24% in May 2020

Power plant tenders in May 2020 saw 84 tenders announced, marking a drop of 24% over the last 12-month average of 111, according to GlobalData’s power industry tenders database.

The proportion of tenders by category tracked by GlobalData in the month was as follows:

  1. Project Implementation: 61 tenders and a 72.6% share
  2. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: 14 tenders and a 16.7% share
  3. Consulting & Similar Services: nine tenders and a 10.7% share.

Asia-Pacific leads power plant activity in May 2020

Comparing tenders activity in power plant segment in different regions of the globe, Asia-Pacific held the top position with 38 tenders and a share of 45.2% during May 2020, followed by Europe with 19 tenders and a 22.6% share and North America with 14 tenders and a 16.7% share.

Solar is leading technology for power plant tenders in May 2020

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 60 tenders with a 73.2% share, followed by hydro with 16 tenders and a 19.5% share and thermal with six tenders and a 7.3% share.

Power plant tenders in May 2020: Top companies by capacity

The top issuers of power plant tenders for the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Suruhanjaya Tenaga (Malaysia): 1,000MW from one tender
  2. NTPC (India): 600MW from one tender
  3. Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission & Distribution (Zimbabwe): 500MW capacity from one tender.
