Smart grid contracts down 37% in Q2 2021

Smart grid contracts in Q2 2021 saw 38 contracts announced, marking a drop of 37% over the last four-quarter average of 60, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 24 contracts and a 63.2% share
  2. Project Implementation: ten contracts and a 26.3% share
  3. Consulting & Similar Services: three contracts and a 7.9% share
  4. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: one contract and a 2.6% share.

Europe leads smart grid activity in Q2 2021

Comparing contracts activity in smart grid segment in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 14 contracts and a share of 36.8% during Q2 2021, followed by Asia-Pacific with ten contracts and a 26.3% share and North America with eight contracts and a 21.1% share.

Solar is leading technology for smart grid contracts in Q2 2021

Among the technologies, solar accounted for five contracts with a 55.6% share, followed by thermal with one contract and an 11.1% share and wind with one contract and an 11.1% share.

The top issuers of smart grid contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. State Compensation Insurance Fund: 9.8MW from one contract
  2. Administration of Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh: 5MW from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. ENGIE North America (United States): 9.8MW from one contract
  2. DHYBRID Power Systems (Germany): 2.65MW from one contract.
