Smart grid contracts up 17% in Q4 2020

Smart grid contracts in Q4 2020 saw 69 contracts announced, marking a rise of 17% over the last four-quarter average of 59, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

The proportion of contracts by category tracked by GlobalData in the quarter was as follows:

  1. Supply & Erection: 58 contracts and an 84.1% share
  2. Project Implementation: nine contracts and a 13% share
  3. Repair, Maintenance, Upgrade & Others: one contract and a 1.4% share
  4. Electricity Supply: one contract and a 1.4% share.

Europe leads smart grid activity in Q4 2020

Comparing contracts activity in smart grid segment in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 54 contracts and a share of 78.3% during Q4 2020, followed by Asia-Pacific with six contracts and an 8.7% share and North America with four contracts and a 5.8% share.

Wind is leading technology for smart grid contracts in Q4 2020

Among the technologies, wind accounted for 14 contracts with a 77.8% share, followed by solar with three contracts and a 16.7% share and thermal with one contract and a 5.6% share.

The top issuers of smart grid contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Terna (Italy): 25MW from one contract
  2. Port of San Diego (United States): 0.7MW from one contract.

The top winners of contracts for the quarter in terms of power capacity involved were:

  1. Engie EPS (France) and FCA US L (United States): 25MW from one contract
  2. EDF Renewables North America (United States): 0.7MW from one contract.
