The Tamarugal Solar Thermal Power Plant – Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage System is a 450,000kW energy storage project located in Tamarugal, Tarapaca, Chile. The rated storage capacity of the project is 5,850,000kWh.

The thermal energy storage project uses molten salt as its storage technology. The project was announced in 2016 and will be commissioned in 2021.

Description

The Tamarugal Solar Thermal Power Plant – Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage System is being developed by SolarReserve. The project is owned by SolarReserve (100%).

The key applications of the project are renewables capacity firming and renewables energy time shift.

The project will be comprised of three 150 MW solar thermal towers each with 13 hours of full load energy storage, delivering 459 MW of continuous output, resulting in over 2,600 GWhs generated annually. The facility will operate at a capacity factor and availability percentage equal to that of a coal fired power plant, while providing a highly competitive price of power – and with zero emissions. Tamarugal has received all its permits, and is shovel ready.
