Indian engineering and manufacturing company Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) has secured four orders from NTPC to provide emission control equipment.

Under the terms of the Rs29bn ($390m) contract, BHEL will supply and install flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) systems.

“With its in-house capabilities, BHEL supplies technology designed to reduce and control NOx levels.”

The systems will be used to control SOx emissions at NTPC’s 3x660MW North Karanpura, 2x500MW Mauda Stage-I, 3x660MW Barh Stage-I and 2x660MW Barh Stage-II power projects.

BHEL, which has been a major player in this area for more than a decade, successfully executed the FGD system at Tata Power’s Trombay Unit 8 in 2008.

The company has been offering emission control equipment in India and is reported to be one of the first companies in the country to tap this segment.

With the latest orders, BHEL is currently deploying FGD systems for 17 NTPC units as well as at its joint ventures, including 3x250MW Bongaigaon, 2x490MW National Capital Power Station (NCPS) at Dadri and 2x660MW Maitree in Bangladesh.

Until now, BHEL secured FGD orders for 32 units from various customers.

For FGD systems, the company is working with Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) and HLB Power. For the large size gates and dampers, it has collaborated with the Republic of Korea.

In addition to NTPC, state utilities of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu have also contracted BHEL for supplying emission control equipment.

With its in-house capabilities, BHEL supplies technology designed to reduce and control NOx levels.

Additionally, BHEL is supplying selective catalytic reduction (SCRs) for a higher reduction in NOx emissions.

At present, the company has a technology collaboration with Korean firm NANO for SCR catalysts in coal-fired power plants.
