BW ESS and Danske Commodities have entered into a ten-year agreement for the trading and optimisation of the entire 200MW/857MW-hour (MWh) Berkswell battery energy storage system (BESS) in the UK.
The Berkswell site is set to become one of the UK’s largest and longest-duration battery storage sites.

Located near Solihull in England’s Midlands, the project began construction in September 2026 and is scheduled to commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2027.
Under the floor agreement, Danske Commodities will provide all trading and optimisation services for the asset throughout the ten-year contract term.
Danske Commodities CEO Jakob Sørensen said: “We are proud to have been selected by BW ESS to optimise Berkswell.
“Drawing on more than 15 years of experience in British power markets, we will use our trading expertise to maximise the value of the asset while providing the flexibility needed to integrate intermittent renewable generation.
“The UK is a core market for us, and Berkswell is an important addition to our growing portfolio of flexible assets.”
Once operational, the Berkswell facility is expected to provide up to four hours of electricity for approximately 700,000 UK homes.
The system will store power when there is surplus generation and release it during periods of higher demand, supporting renewable energy integration and contributing to the stability and reliability of the national grid.
Strategically located near major centres of electricity demand, the BESS will provide vital grid flexibility and support a reliable power supply.
BW ESS chief commercial officer Kilian Leykam said: “This agreement with Danske Commodities provides a strong commercial foundation for Berkswell and helps unlock the long-term value of this strategically important energy storage project.
“With construction under way, we are another step closer to bringing the project online and delivering critical flexibility to the UK grid.”
BW ESS developed the Berkswell project from greenfield origination and holds ownership jointly with AIP Management, an investor specialising in energy and decarbonisation projects.
Sungrow’s PowerTitan 3 technology is expected to be installed at the Berkswell site to help meet the efficiency, reliability and performance needs of the UK’s developing electricity system.
Last month, BW ESS purchased two stand-alone utility-scale BESS projects in Spain with a combined capacity of 126MW (up to 675MWh).
