Energy trading company Danske Commodities has entered into a long-term agreement to provide trading and optimisation services for the Hunterston battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the UK.
The 400MW/800MW-hour (MWh) facility in North Ayrshire, Scotland, is being developed by Revera Energy, which is backed by Carlyle, a global investment firm.

The financial close for the project has now been achieved and a notice to proceed (NTP) with construction has been issued, with operations expected to commence in the third quarter of 2028.
The Hunterston BESS will connect to SP Energy Networks’ 400kV transmission system and aims to provide large-scale energy storage to support grid resilience, constraint management and the integration of renewable energy across Scotland.
Danske Commodities’ role will involve utilising a fully automated algorithmic approach to deliver returns through wholesale and ancillary services markets.
The company will offer trading and optimisation services based on a long-term revenue floor structure. BP has been appointed as an optimisation co-partner, providing a long-term tolling structure.

Sungrow will supply the battery and provide a long-term service agreement, while the OCU Group has been contracted for balance of plant and ongoing maintenance.
Hunterston BESS senior project manager Sam Lewis said: “Achieving financial close and NTP on Hunterston BESS is a strong indication of our team’s ability to recognise quality projects, secure top-tier supply chain relationships and unlock financing in an impressively short period of time.”
The Hunterston BESS is Revera Energy’s second utility-scale battery storage scheme in the country.
In March this year, Revera selected Danske Commodities as its optimisation partner for the 400MWh Windyhill BESS project.
