Duke Energy Renewables to build wind project in Texas

Duke Energy Renewables, a subsidiary of Duke Energy based in Charlotte, North Carolina, has announced plans to establish a 200MW wind project, Mesteño, in Starr County, Texas.

Duke Energy Renewables has announced plans to establish a 200MW wind project at Mesteño in Starr County, Texas. Duke Energy Renewables will build, own and operate the Mesteño project, its fourth wind generation facility in Starr County.

The company will also enter into a hedge agreement that will cover most of the expected production. The Mesteño facility will produce enough electricity to power 60,000 homes.

Supporters of the project include the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School district, Starr County Hospital and South Texas College.

Vestas supplied 56 3.6MW turbines for the project. At 590.5ft, the turbines will be among the tallest in the US and harness stronger winds and increase wind energy production.

Duke Energy has appointed Wanzek Construction as the contractor for the project, with Amshore US Wind also providing development support.

Construction on the project has already begun and will be completed by the end of 2019.

The Mesteño project is expected to create 200 jobs during the peak of construction as well as $16m in tax revenue over the first 10 years of operation.

The Mesteño project increases Duke Energy Renewables wind capacity in the US to over 2,500MW.
