Energy Vault and NV Energy have started commercial operation of the Reid Gardner BESS in Moapa, in the US state of Nevada.

This development marks a significant step in energy storage solutions as the 220MW/440 megawatt-hour grid-tied BESS is one of the largest in the state.

Situated on the site of a former coal-fired electric generating facility, the Reid Gardner BESS project is a two-hour energy storage system.

It has been designed to store and dispatch surplus renewable energy such as wind and solar power.

The BESS is routinely charged and discharged daily. The stored renewable energy will be released during peak consumption times.

Now operating at full capacity, the system is managed by NV Energy, utilising Energy Vault’s integration platform and energy management system, known as Vault-OS.

Energy Vault was appointed by project owner NV Energy in December 2022. The company was tasked with designing a custom BESS solution and undertaking the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) work for the project.

Energy Vault chief commercial and product officer Marco Terruzzin said: “The completion of the Reid Gardner Battery Energy Storage System, on budget and on schedule in a compressed time schedule, stands as a testament to Energy Vault’s commitment to the efficient delivery of sophisticated high-performance energy storage systems to customers like NV Energy.

“We are grateful for NV Energy’s strong partnership throughout this process, from the start of planning until the commencement of operations today.

“It is our goal at Energy Vault to serve as the energy storage company of choice for utilities, IPPs [independent power producers] and large energy users, and we are proud to deliver a system that will provide clean energy and grid resiliency to Nevada communities while also advancing the state’s carbon neutrality goals.”

NV Energy renewables vice-president Jimmy Daghlian said: “We truly appreciated the dedication and quick work of Energy Vault to ensure the Reid Gardner Battery Energy Storage System came in on time and on budget. It was clear from the start that this project was a priority for Energy Vault, from the top levels of the company all the way down.”
