Eco Wave Power, a Sweden-based onshore wave energy developer, has connected its first wave energy station, located at the Port of Jaffa in Tel Aviv, to the electricity grid in Israel.
The project, known as EWP-EDF One, has a power-generating capacity of 100kW, enough to power 100 homes at peak efficiency.
It will now proceed toward full system calibration and will be followed by a formal “plug-in” and demonstration in the second half of 2023.
Eco Wave Power built the wave power station in collaboration with EDF Renewables’ Israeli subsidiary and the Israeli Energy Ministry. The company states that its technology is recognised by the ministry as pioneering.
The wave energy system features ten floaters along with the port’s pre-existing breakwater. Each floater is connected directly to Eco Wave Power’s land-based energy conversion unit, which offers easy access for operational maintenance and upgrades.
Eco Wave Power founder and CEO Inna Braverman stated: “I am grateful to the EDF Renewables IL team, the Israeli Energy Ministry, the Atarim Group (which manages and develops the Tel-Aviv Jaffa coastline) and my entire team at Eco Wave Power who worked tirelessly to take this project from an idea to a new source of clean energy for Israel.

By GlobalData“We believe this is just the start for wave energy and we are excited for this station to serve as a catalyst for many more projects across the globe.”
Eco Wave Power stated that the use of existing structures at the port exemplifies its commitment to sustainably build clean energy projects at almost any location. The adaptability is shown by installing the project at the Port of Jaffa, one of the world’s oldest ports.
The next port at which the project will be installed will be the Port of Los Angeles in the US, one of the world’s busiest seaports.
In July 2023, the company secured a GREENinMED grant from the EU, under the European Neighbourhood Instrument Cross-Border Co-operation Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme.
