Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) has announced plans to install a 100MW battery storage system at its power plant site in Marbach, Germany.

The battery facility, with a capacity of 100MWh, is designed to bolster the stability of the entire southern German electricity grid rather than supplying power directly to households.

Construction of the plant is set to begin next year, with operations targeted to begin by the end of 2025.

This project is part of EnBW’s strategy to integrate battery storage systems with other forms of power generation such as pumped storage plants and hydrogen-capable gas-fired power plants, to create a more reliable and flexible power supply.

EnBW noted that the Marbach facility will be equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries, which are notable for not containing cobalt.

The company highlighted that the new system and the existing infrastructure will share resources, leading to project synergies, including the grid connection.

EnBW head of generation portfolio development Michael Class said: “With the increasing share of electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar energy, it is becoming increasingly important to be able to store energy and make it available again at another time.

“This so-called disposable power, which can be made available on demand, plays a central role in the futureproof transformation of energy generation.

“In this way, the weather-related fluctuating generation from renewable energies and the actual demand in the grid can be reconciled.”

In September this year, EnBW won the bids for seven solar parks in an open-field photovoltaic auction organised by the German Federal Network Agency.
