Germany-based Encavis has entered into its first hybrid power purchase agreement (PPA) in Spain, supplying renewable electricity generated from both solar and wind sources to Spanish energy company Visalia.

Under the three-and-a-half-year deal, Encavis will provide 60GW-hours (GWh) of electricity per year from its 199MW Aragon portfolio near Zaragoza.

The energy will be sourced from two solar parks and three wind farms within the region.

The agreement combines the generation profiles of wind and solar power, aiming to offer a more balanced supply of renewable electricity throughout the day and across seasons.

Visalia operates independently in energy and telecommunications infrastructure across Spain, managing more than 500 urban renewable energy facilities and maintaining in excess of 1,000km of electricity distribution and high-speed fibre-optic networks.

Under its agreement with Encavis, Visalia advances its renewable procurement and diversification strategy by locking in 60GWh per year of solar and wind generation to help meet the rising energy demand of its expanding customer base.

Visalia managing director Alejandro Tejero-Garcés said: “This agreement with Encavis strengthens our strategy of providing a comprehensive energy supply to our residential customers, homeowners’ associations and SMEs [small and medium-sized enterprises].

“By combining locally generated solar energy from our solar neighbourhoods (barrios solares) with wind power, we can complement our energy supply at night and move towards a more efficient, sustainable and competitive energy model.”

Encavis lists Spain as a major market, operating 1GW of solar and wind capacity nationwide.

Notable assets in its Spanish portfolio include the 300MW Talayuela solar park, the 200MW La Cabrera solar park and the 150MW Aragon wind project.

The company highlights that some of these facilities rank among the first utility-scale solar sites in Europe constructed and operated without public subsidies.

Encavis owns and manages renewable energy assets including onshore wind farms, ground-mounted solar parks and battery storage systems across 13 European countries, with operations in Germany, Italy and Spain.

Encavis CEO Mario Schirru said: “Spain is one of our most important markets, and this agreement marks another step in the transition of our business.

“By combining wind and solar generation with power structuring, we can offer customers solutions that better match their needs. The PPA with Visalia demonstrates how we are bringing this approach to life.”
