Enel’s Indian renewable subsidiary BLP Energy has secured right to sign a 25-year energy supply contract for a 285MW windfarm in the state of Gujarat, Western India.

The project was awarded to BPL Energy under the Fourth Tranche of the 2GW national wind tender, which was issued by the government-owned company Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).

Enel Green Power CEO Antonio Cammisecra said: “We are very pleased about this first tender award in India.

“With this award, we have made an important step forward in strengthening and consolidating our presence in a country we consider strategic.

“Looking ahead, we are planning to expand further in India, which will also serve as a platform for growth throughout the overall Asia-Pacific region, fully leveraging on the huge availability of renewable resources and growing energy demand of this area.”

For construction of the windpower project, Enel will be investing $290m, and SECI will be supporting the project by purchasing specified volumes of energy over a 25-year period.

With a power generation capacity of more than 1,000GW per year, the new windfarm is expected to commence its operations in the second half of next year.

Upon completion, the new windfarm is expected supports the country’s need for new power generation capacity and the country’s environmental goals.

The government of India has set a target to achieve 100GW of solar and 60GW of windpower generation capacity by 2022.

Through its Indian subsidiary, Enel owns and operates 172MW of wind capacity producing around 340GW per annum in the Indian states of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
