Engie North America has initiated the construction of the Live Oak Wind Project at Schleicher County, near San Angelo, Texas, US.

A part of the Infinity Renewables portfolio, Live Oak will have a power generation capacity of approximately 200MW and is scheduled to begin operations by the end of this year.

In February, Engie North America acquired Infinity Renewables, which develops utility-scale wind projects in the US.

Live Oak will be built with a $200m investment and feature 76 Siemens-Gamesa 2.625MW turbines with 120m rotors.

“It’s a testament to the strength of the acquisition and our collective drive to build the strongest wind portfolio possible in the US.”

The remaining facility will be constructed by Minnesota-based construction company Blattner Energy.

Infinity Renewables started working on the Live Oak project in 2009 and also worked with landowners and the local community to advance the project to construction.

Engie North America US Wind Development senior vice-president and head Matt Riley said: “We are thrilled to break ground on the Live Oak project so soon after completing our sale to Engie.

“It’s a testament to the strength of the acquisition and our collective drive to build the strongest wind portfolio possible in the US. Live Oak is just the first of many successes we expect over the coming months and years.”

The energy firm anticipates that the project will generate significant benefits to the region, with annual payments to landowners, and purchases of local goods and services.
