US-based photovoltaic (PV) solar systems manufacturer First Solar is planning to build a new solar module manufacturing facility in Perrysburg, Ohio, with a $400m investment.
First Solar’s new 1.2GW factory will be built near its existing facility and engaged in the production of advanced technology Series 6 thin film photovoltaic (PV) module.
The construction of the one million square foot facility will begin later this year and is expected to commence production by next year.
First Solar global manufacturing senior vice-president Mike Koralewski said: “Strong demand in the US for advanced solar technology, along with recent changes in US corporate tax policies, has encouraged our decision to grow First Solar’s US production operations.
“State and local officials and Jobs Ohio have also worked with us to create a business-friendly environment that supported our objectives.
“These factors, combined with our own economies of scale in high-tech manufacturing, make expanding US operations an attractive, win-win opportunity.”

First Solar chief operating officer Tymen de Jong said: “Expanding our US manufacturing is particularly exciting. We originated in Ohio, and we’re proud to build on that history as we grow into the future.”
The new facility will also have the provision for expansion, which will depend upon the future demand for advanced solar technology.
