GE Vernova has announced a significant expansion of its manufacturing facilities in Stafford, UK, to meet the increasing demand for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems.
The systems are essential for the transmission of renewable energy across Europe, Asia and North America.

The expansion will focus on two key sites within the company’s electrification systems’ grid solutions business.
The Stafford HVDC facility at Redhill, known for producing HVDC and flexible alternating current transmission systems valves, is expected to double its valve manufacturing capacity. This includes the installation of an additional voltage-sourced converter valve assembly line.
The Stafford transformer facility, which manufactures HVDC converter transformers, will undergo upgrades to increase capacity and enhance its ability to produce the critical components for integrating renewable energy into the grid.
The transformers have been instrumental in projects such as the 1.4GW Sofia offshore wind farm in the North Sea.

By GlobalDataThis expansion is the second major investment in the Stafford site by GE Vernova. In 2018, the company built one of its most advanced HVDC valve test facilities and a control system testing facility, enabling large-scale testing and validation of HVDC systems for projects across Europe and beyond.
GE Vernova’s grid solutions business will create 600 new jobs in the UK between 2023 and the end of 2025.
Hundreds of engineers and skilled craftspeople are required to support the assembly and testing of the valves.
GE Vernova’s grid solutions business recently signed an agreement to supply HVDC systems for five of TenneT’s offshore wind projects – part of TenneT’s ambition to connect 40GW offshore wind farms to the high voltage grids in the Netherlands and Germany.
The technology for these projects will be manufactured at the Stafford facilities.
With three manufacturing sites in Stafford – the HVDC site, the transformer site and a grid automation facility at Redhill – GE Vernova continues to strengthen Stafford’s position as a critical hub for clean energy technology production.

In September 2024, GE Vernova and Lizard Renewables launched a joint venture, Alva Power, to co-develop renewable energy projects in Italy.
