GE has secured a gas turbine supply contract from state-owned power utility firm Guangdong Energy Group for the Dongguan Ningzhou combined-cycle power plant in China’s Greater Bay Area.

According to the contract, GE will supply three of its 9HA.02 heavy-duty gas turbines for the power plant in Guangdong province.

GE Gas Power China president Yang Dan said: “The Dongguan Ningzhou power plant is expected to become one of the largest gas plants in mainland China and plays a significant role in promoting the world’s lower-carbon and sustainable development.

“GE’s H-Class Combined Cycle Power Plant has unmatched efficiency available at >64% net combined cycle efficiency, higher than any other OEM or competing technology today.

“In addition, our HA turbines being fuel flexible, have the capability to transition from gas to hydrogen, paving the way to a more decarbonised world.”

Upon the installation of the new gas turbines, the Dongguan Ningzhou power plant will add 2.4GW of electricity, which will be sufficient to power more than four million homes in China.

It is also set to become one of the largest gas power plants in the country’s mainland region.

The new gas turbines will also help Guangdong province to support national goals to transition from coal to natural gas.

For this project, GE’s local partner Harbin Electric will provide steam turbine, generator and balance-of-plant equipment for the Ningzhou power plant.

Harbin Electric general manager Wu Weizhang said: “We are pleased to collaborate with GE in providing leading gas power generation technologies to the expected largest gas power plant in mainland China.

“Harbin Electric Corporation and GE will jointly focus on HA class gas turbine’s localisation, aiming to deliver efficient and reliable support for China gas power plants, whether in project’s preparation or power plant’s operation and services.”

The power plant is expected to commence operations in 2022.
