State-operated hydroelectric power generation company SJVN announced on Saturday (28 September) that India is launching a tender for 6GW of electricity from renewable energy projects with storage to ensure supply during peak hours.
The tender will be managed by SJVN. The company hopes for power supply from an inter-state transmission system that distributes electricity across state lines to the entire country, as reported by the Times of India.
India aims to connect 35GW of solar and wind capacity to its grid by March 2025 as part of its decarbonisation initiative to reach 500GW of non-fossil power capacity.
According to Power Technology’s parent company, GlobalData, electricity generation from wind and solar technologies in India continued inclining in 2023, with wind totalling 83.39 terawatt-hours (TWh) and solar 115.97TWh in 2023, up from 71.82TWh and 102.01TWh, respectively, in 2022. The country added 10GW of renewable energy capacity between April and August this year. Its total renewable capacity now stands at 153GW.
Despite this increase, renewables only constitute 21.66% of the country’s total electricity generation, according to GlobalData.
The top bureaucrat at India’s Ministry for New and Renewable Energy in India, Singh Bhalla, told Reuters that the country is expecting an influx of battery-linked energy storage projects.
