US-based technology firm Itron has signed an agreement to support Mississippi Power’s grid modernisation plans.

According to the agreement, Itron’s standards-based Gen5 IPv6 network platform will be deployed and managed to connect nearly 93,000 advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) devices to improve grid reliability for Mississippi Power customers.

The technology firm has also agreed to improve back-office capabilities of Mississippi Power through a five-year software-as-a-service (Saas) model to assist the utility’s operational and customer engagement transformation efforts.

“The opportunity to work with Mississippi Power to deliver its customers a more reliable, cost-effective and efficient smart grid is truly rewarding.”

With the integration of Itron’s technology into selected Mississippi Power smart meters, secure wireless networking connectivity can be established between the latter’s business and residential customers to its back office.

With this technology, the utility will be able to establish resilient mesh network to provide access to demand, consumption, time-of-use and interval data, alarms and power-quality data from its smart meters.

Itron Electricity business president Mark de Vere White said: “We’re excited to be expanding our footprint in the southeastern US through our agreement with Mississippi Power on its progressive efforts to modernise its grid system.
