ABB has secured a $30m order to provide a substation at the 3,000MW power plant in southern Iraq.
As part of the order, ABB will design, engineer, supply, and install the 400kv air insulated switchgear (AIS) substation, which will also include advanced digital control, protection, and telecommunication systems.
Once installed, it will be used to connect the power plant to Iraq’s national grid.
ABB power grids division president Claudio Facchin said: “Our advanced substation solution will help bring much needed electricity to the region by expanding capacity and strengthening Iraq’s power infrastructure.
“This project adds to our extensive installed base in the region and supports our next level strategic thrust on growing markets.”
Iraq-based power producer Shamara Holding Group (SHG) will operate the plant, which seeks to increase its power generation capacity by around 20% and address acute shortages of electricity in the country.
The plant is expected to improve Iraq’s current 13,000MW generation capacity, which is not enough to fulfil the country’s peak load demand of nearly 23,000MW.
