Ameren’s Missouri-based subsidiary has unveiled a plan to invest around $1bn to increase windpower generation capacity.
An addition of 700MW is expected, which will be situated in Missouri and neighbouring US states by 2020.
Ameren Missouri is currently in discussion with various developers to finalise the source, location, and cost of the new windpower facilities.
In addition, the company aims to add 100MW of new solarpower generation capacity over the next decade, with 50MW expected to go online by 2025.
Ameren Missouri president Michael Moehn said: “This is Ameren Missouri's largest-ever commitment to clean, renewable energy.
“We are committed to bringing our customers innovative solutions that are both cost-effective and environmentally responsible while maintaining the reliability our customers expect.”
As part its new energy efficiency plan, Ameren Missouri also aims to save 570,000MWh of energy over a period of three years. The saving is equivalent to the energy used by around 45,000 homes.
The company also plans to retire more than half of its coal-fired generating capacity, which includes the Meramec Energy Centre in south St. Louis County by the end of 2022.
In addition, Ameren Missouri revealed the goal of reducing its carbon emissions 80% by 2050 from the 2005 level.
